The Atari 2600 — originally sold as the Video Computer System — launched in 1977 and brought arcade gaming into living rooms for the first time. Its library of Pitfall!, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Asteroids, and Combat defined early home gaming. With Provenance, you can play the entire 2600 catalog on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.

Provenance is free, open-source, and available directly from the App Store. No jailbreak required.

Supported File Formats

Atari 2600 ROM files are small by modern standards. Provenance supports all common formats:

  • .a26 — The dedicated Atari 2600 ROM extension
  • .bin — Generic binary format; the most common format for 2600 dumps
  • .rom — Alternate ROM extension used by some archiving tools

Because Atari 2600 cartridges were so small — most are under 32KB — entire libraries take up a fraction of modern storage.

Features

Playing Atari 2600 games in Provenance gives you access to the full suite of emulator features:

  • Save States — Save at any point; most 2600 games had no native save functionality, making this essential for longer sessions
  • Controller Support — Full MFi, Xbox, and PlayStation controller compatibility; the simple 2600 joystick maps naturally to a single analog stick and button
  • Shader Support — CRT scanline and phosphor filters to recreate the warm, blurry look of playing on a 1970s television
  • Cheat Codes — Code support for supported titles
  • Fast Forward — Accelerate through slower sections
  • On-Screen Controls — Customizable touch overlay for playing without a physical controller
